From Waste Heat to Watts: Our Thermal Recovery Project
Tanklager’s latest thermal recovery innovation is changing the way terminals look about waste. We now create 2.1 GWh of electricity each year by trapping surface heat from large-volume tanks, enough to power 600 households. This not only offsets operational energy use, but also contributes directly to our sustainability performance. It is a closed-loop concept that converts heat loss into long-term environmental and economical benefits.

How Organic Rankine Tech Turns Heat into Revenue
Our technology employs ORC turbines to transform low-grade thermal energy above 75°C into useful power with excellent efficiency. We supply extra energy to local businesses through a 5-kilometer district heating network. This initiative now earns €280,000 per year through certified carbon credits, converting emissions reductions into revenue. We are not just recovering energy, but also selling it strategically.
trusted expertise
With decades of thermal process engineering experience, Tanklager has transformed environmental compliance into operational leadership. Our engineers have worked on energy recovery projects throughout Scandinavia and the DACH area, ensuring technical expertise and regional knowledge.
innovating ideas
Heat is treated as a valuable resource, not as waste. Tanklager demonstrates that circular economy concepts can create profitability and resilience in the energy storage sector by combining ORC technology and participation in the carbon markets.
A Regulatory Model for Tomorrow’s Terminals
Tanklager is ahead of the curve, as the EU mandates heat recovery for tanks over 50,000m³ under the Energy Efficiency Directive. Our early compliance helps us avoid costly retrofits and accords with institutional investors’ ESG expectations. “We’ve designed this for scale,” explains Nina Brunner, Sustainability Lead. “BP saw a 9% IRR with a similar system, we’re targeting 12% thanks to optimized flow and local demand.”
