Facing stringent EU Energy Efficiency Directive targets and client demands for sustainable logistics, Tanklager AG Cadenazzo needed to address its 8.4 GWh annual energy consumption, which generated 3,200 tons of CO₂ emissions. Rising energy costs and limited rooftop space created complex hurdles for renewable integration, with our 2023 audit showing 76% of daytime loads were suitable for solar conversion but required innovative solutions to overcome intermittency challenges and space constraints
project goals
In 2023, we started our phased solar transformation with 512 bifacial panels on tank rooftops that produced 1.2 GWh annually. In 2024, we added 0.8 GWh capacity with agrivoltaic carports that included EV charging. In addition to installing 4 MWh saltwater battery storage to guarantee clean power around the clock and utilizing AI-driven energy routing to maximize solar utilization for high-load processes, we also connected to Switzerland’s virtual power plant network to profit from excess energy during moments of high demand.
the result
This strategic renewable energy integration now provides 32% of our facility’s power from solar sources, lowering annual emissions by 1,024 tonnes and generating €380,000 in energy savings and €45,000 in VPP revenue by 2024. Recognized with the Swiss Solar Prize, these upgrades have become a competitive differentiator, assisting us in securing contracts with sustainability-focused biofuel partners and positioning us for Phase 3’s 10 MWh storage expansion and hydrogen electrolyzer integration in 2025.
