project brief
As Tanklager AG Cadenazzo expands its crude and petroleum storage capabilities, benchmarking against the world’s leading storage hubs

Surging Demand for Strategic Petroleum Reserves
The challenge
With 98% utilization rates at its current 80,000m³ facility and a 34% increase in diesel import costs through Rhine logistics lines due to geopolitical concerns and EU energy security obligations, Tanklager AG Cadenazzo faced significant challenges in 2024. Older infrastructure from the 1990s lacked contemporary vapor recovery equipment, resulting in 0.8% yearly product losses and 72-hour delays due to manual mixing procedures. The EU’s Energy Taxation Directive (2024) and new Swiss seismic rules enforced stringent carbon criteria (maximum 3 kg CO₂e/m³) and required drone-based leak monitoring, necessitating immediate improvements to be competitive with international hubs like Rotterdam, Houston, and Fujairah.
project goals
To reduce bunker fuel use by 40%, the extension included 12 double-walled tanks (180,000m³) with robotic epoxy coating, AI-driven inventory management (which reduced measurement errors to 0.05%), and solar-powered heating systems. Automated truck loading arms and blockchain-integrated custody tracking reduced turnaround times from 22 to 8 minutes, while advanced vapor recovery towers captured 98.7% of pollutants. Road travel was cut by 70% thanks to a new pipeline spur to the Gotthard rail terminal, while biofuel corridors ensured that 25% of the required renewable handling was met.
the result
By lowering CO2 emissions by 1,200 tons annually and vapor losses to 0.25%, the project made Tanklager a Top 10% low-carbon storage supplier (EcoVadis Platinum), saving €4.7 million yearly. It became the first SAF (sustainable aviation fuel)-certified hub in Switzerland and signed a 10-year, €15 million/year contract with TotalEnergies for strategic reserves. The extension outperformed legacy facilities in Jurong and Antwerp, garnered international accolades, including the 2024 Global Tank Storage Award, and established a standard for modular, tech-driven terminals.
